Tuscany Wine Tasting Tours

Val D'Orcia - Montepulciano, Pienza and San Quirico

tour description

It's Wine Time! Tuscany wine tasting tours, in an enjoyable countryside, rich in landscapes, art, culture, history and tradition!

The Tuscany wine tasting tour is specially arranged for wine lovers who are looking for a different day trip from Rome or from its surroundings (Florence, Siena, and so on)!

Val D'Orcia - Montepulciano, Pienza and San Quirico

Our guided tour in limo will drive you through tidy farms and smooth green hills, which "under the tuscan sun" turn into brownish yellow, with golden fadings. Along gently winding roads, where lots of driving tests are filmed because nice roads here match with splendid rural landscapes, vineyards are all over the place as this is one of the world's most famous wine producing areas. The Queen of the Roads here is the "Strada del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano" (Road of the Noble Wine of Montepulciano), and the red wine who provides this name is simply out of this world! We'll plan toghether the stops of your personalized day trip from a wide choice of local wine producers. You'll be able to compare different wineries, most of which are family owned. They sell and ship their own top quality wines and olive oils. Once in Montepulciano you'll be captured by the natural beauty of this village with Etruscan roots and a rich medieval history. As the soil here is vulcanic, a very common material is the "tufo" (tuff stone), a vulcanic rock. Infact most of the houses in this part of Italy are made out of tuff stone, so they all have the same special light brown color. In Montepulciano is easy to spend a full day tour, as there's a lot of sights, shops selling local artifacts, restaurants with delicious local cuisine and -guess a bit- wineries!! On the top of the hill there's the main square, Piazza Grande, where the Duomo and the City Hall are. Both are ancient and the square is so unique in the world that it's been chosen for filming part of Newmoon  from the Twilight Saga

Another spectacular and scenic drive and you'll be in the next stop of your day trip: in the famous Pienza, Niccolò Piccolomini's hometown, better known as Pope Pio II, who wanted it to become an important Renaissance town. He radically changed it and gave it the name of Pienza, from Pio. As soon as you'll step into Pienza and you'll stroll along the main street, you will immediately notice that a delicious yummy smell of tuscan pecorino cheese is all over the place. Infact in the ancient times locals used to hide their cheese in holes dug in the rock and closed with big stones, in order to save it from the frequent robberies; it was a great surprise when they discovered that thanks to this special aging the cheese gained a very unique special taste! Sometimes the holes were filled up with ashes from the cheminies and wood ovens, and that's how the typical black skinned Pecorino of Pienza d.o.p. was born! Nowadays, they use different blends of ashes and rosemary, grapes and many other flavors to provide different seasonings with a wide choice of awesome cheeses.

Your Tuscany wine tasting tour continues.
Just a few minutes drive from Pienza and you will admire the medieval village of S. Quirico d'Orcia. Amazing, tidy, quiet but yet lively, S. Quirico d'Orcia is one of the less known masterpieces of this italian region. Churches, buildings, tavernas, everything here was built in times ranging from the 11 to the 17 hundreds. The village is just along the Via Francigena, the historical road along which the pilgrims used to walk from France all the way through Rome and towards the Holy Land in Palestine. Misplaced from the main village, there is the suburb called Bagno Vignoni (Vignoni Baths). Here, thanks to the volcanic soil, hot water springs fill up with water the main square, which consists of a huge pool. Lots of people used to come (and still come!) to swim in this healthy waters, and among them popes and members of the most important italian families.
