The Ancient Appian Way and Ostia Antica

tour description

Day trip from Rome: the Ancient Appian Way and Ostia Antica Tour.

Would you like to step on the big cobblestones of the Appian Way, through which in very old ages, the Romans pushed south into Italy for their now historic achievements?

This was the Queen of all roads in Rome, commissioned by Appius Claudius. The Roman civilization proliferated along it, even using her hips as tombs. Among pines and cypress trees still lining up the sides, the road meets tombs, among which the most famous is the tomb of Cecilia Metella. Continuing along the Appian Way, you'll see other important tombs, such as those of Seneca and of Pope Urban.

During the guided tour you will also visit interesting archeological sites: the Mausoleum of Romulus , the Circus of Maxentius, The Tower of Capo di Bove and Caffarella Valley.

The Ancient Appian Way tour will continue towards Ostia Antica, an impressive archeological site close to the modern suburb of Ostia (which in Latin means "mouth", as it is at the mouth of the River Tiber), which was the location of the harbour city of Ancient Rome and that today is second as size only to Pompeii. Ostia Antica is famous for the excellent preservation of its ancient buildings, its impressive mosaicsits and magnificent frescoes! Here, as in Pompeii, will be recognizable ruins of shops, bars, public buildings, public restrooms, brothels and, of course, there is an amphitheater, baths, temples and domuses. Besides, strolling among the ruins of Ostia Antica, you will even see a laundry room where fabrics were washed and colored, the barracks of firefighters, or the mills, where the art of baking, very popular back then, lives on amidst ancient kilns and mills.

Our private guided tour will be a pleasant visit right out of the Eternal City that will amaze you, discovering how many things Rome can still tell.
